It's good to be back in the swing of things, and that includes my subscription box reviews! I've missed doing the ones from March-May as I was away (and I think April actually got sent back to the sender), so here are my thoughts on the June 2014 Violet Box.
This month's 'box' arrived sans box, but was instead, packaged in a pretty makeup bag (the gift to commemorate the Violet Box birthday). Here's what was in the box:
ghd Straight & Tame Cream (full sized)
Bioderma Sebium Pore Refiner (deluxe sample)
Chella Brow Pencil in Light Brown (full sized)
Strange Beautiful Nail Polish (deluxe sample, I think?)
Appelles Blackseed Shampoo & Tamanu Conditioner (deluxe samples)
Caddy's Cosmetic Pouch (full sized)
On to photos...

What did I think of this month's box? Well, I had mixed feelings at the start...Violet Box always do a fantastic job each month so I had really high expectations of the birthday box. My initial impression was that I liked it, but I wasn't blown away by it. In the days that I've had it though, it's grown on me a bit and I am definitely more impressed than I was initially.
The Caddy's cosmetic pouch is adorable (though I do have bag envy at the cute black version some subscribers received). I like that there two separate compartments so you can pop makeup in one side and then brushes, etc, on the other side. It keeps everything organised nicely.

The Bioderma Sebium cream I already have a sample of from another subscription box...which I still haven't used, so I'll probably give this away. I was a little disappointed to see the Chella pencil shade was light brown, as I thought it would be too pale for me, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it and found that it actually blended well into my brows! The thin tip is reminiscent of the Anastasia Brow Wiz, so I'm quite pleased to have it in my stash.
Last but not least, the Appelles Blackseed Shampoo and Tamanu Conditioner. I found it a little odd not to receive the matching set. These smell a little herbal so I'm not sure they are to my taste, but I don't mind giving it a trial at some point in the future. My hair currently has red ombre in it so I'm being good and only using color care shampoo and conditioners.
Overall, I was pretty pleased with the birthday VB. While it's not my favourite box VB have put out, it's still a great box with plenty of value and a good mix of interesting products ranging across makeup, nail polish and skincare. I must say that the thing I love most about VB is the fact that we are consistently introduced to new brands, or new products from less common brands.
Happy birthday, Violetbox! I can't wait to see what other wonderful brands and products you bring to us!
What did you think of this month's box, lovelies? Do you think the birthday box lived up to expectations?
Much love,
MM.

I loved the birthday "box" The bag is so cute, and quite good quality, I haven't received a bad box from they yet. I look forward to it every month.
ReplyDeleteI think the bag might just be my favourite item...I'm having trouble choosing between the bag and the brow pencil. :)
DeleteAgreed, they do spoil us every month.
That bag is super cute! I also like the look of the nail polishes, although the lids look really small - do you think that makes them hard to apply? I'm actually thinking of trying the Violet Box out - they seem to have a good variety of products. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it? I haven't used the polishes yet but I don't think it's hard to apply. I have used mini bottles with tiny lids (like OPI minis) and they usually handle well!
DeleteViolet Box are doing really well, they consistently provide a good mix of products each month. As long as you keep in mind that we all have different preferences and there's always a bit of give and take with each box, you should be reasonably happy! :)
It doesn't look too bad! But I would have expected more for a birthday box! xx
ReplyDeleteYep, we are so spoiled haha...we tend to expect fireworks from 'special' boxes!
DeleteI got the dark blue green bag but I'm actually jealous of your pink bag! haha
ReplyDeleteI love the brow pencil as well as it's very easy to use and I think I'll switch from using brow powder because of it. I like the products we got but yes it's not mind blowing!
Here's what I got btw

I was laughing when I read your review!
DeleteI agree, it's very easy to use...just be sure to use a spoolie to comb through after using it. :)
OMFG I LOVE Violet Box's birthday edition! I mean they have yet to disappoint me, unlike another subscription box I shall not name on here. LOVE what's in their boxes so far and I love the fact that they've used a cosmetic bag as their "box" this month. And not some cheapie sh*t one either. Beats getting lollies and pumice stone to celebrate their 1 year annivesary ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha...I like the reference to the 'Sauron' of subscription boxes!
DeleteAgree with you, they have been terrific value thus far. I hope they keep up the great work.
Ahh, I also love the nail polishes name! The colours are so nice, have you tried them out yet?
ReplyDeleteI haven't, as yet, but I will soon! :)
